It’s that time of year again! Shaunta Grimes of Ninja Writers is hosting another year of BYOB (Blog Your Own Book), and I’m excited to write not one but TWO books this year.

What Can You Expect from BYOB?

BYOB is an annual event that ranges from July to October, with the goal of publishing a book (in any genre) created from a series of blog posts.

In July, writers will select their topics; in August, they write all of their blog posts; in September, they edit those posts and turn them into a cohesive book; and in October, they publish!

Throughout the month of August 2022, you’ll be seeing two blog posts from me per day for BYOB, as I’ll be working on two related, but separate, books.

What Will I Be Writing About?

As some of you know, I moved to Croatia with my family in November 2020. The country was still closed down because of the pandemic, but people were able to travel in and out, making it possible for us to move.

The first topic I want to address is the digital nomad lifestyle. If you freelance or are interested in doing so, you’ve more than likely read at least one article or book about the traveling freelancer or the digital nomad lifestyle. If you’re like me and have read quite a few of these resources, you’ve probably noticed that they’re all very… similar, and perhaps even fluffy/shallow in their content and usefulness.

I want to create a book that is much more specific and useful to those who want to work while traveling or be able to continue their work while moving from country to country. But more importantly, I want to talk about how to immerse yourself in the culture, as well as how to actively contribute to your community and avoid gentrification (as much as possible). Too many of these resources talk about freelancers like they live in a static vacuum, able to observe the culture of the country they’re visiting without really absorbing those experiences and without causing any sort of impact in that community by being…
